We’re thrilled to share the story behind one of our favourite community projects – the brand-new Volunteers’ Hut at Upton Country Park, built entirely from scratch by the Dorset Build & Maintenance team.

This wasn’t your average build. From the very first day, we faced challenges that tested our skills and creativity – but also made the finished result even more rewarding.

Breaking Ground – In a Bog!

Before we could even start the structure, we had to dig out the footings… in what can only be described as a soaking wet bog. The ground conditions were challenging, but with the right equipment, expertise, and determination, we prepared a stable base ready for construction.

Building the Structure – Strong, Warm, and Weatherproof

Once the footings were ready, we:

  • Erected the metal frame for strength and durability.

  • Installed a metal insulated roof to keep the hut warm in winter and cool in summer.

  • Clad the outside in wooden panelling, painted black for a sleek, timeless finish that blends perfectly into the park surroundings.

  • Fitted windows and doors, letting in plenty of natural light and providing secure access.

Inside the Volunteers’ Hut – Comfort Meets Practicality

Inside, we made sure the space would be warm, comfortable, and easy to maintain:

  • Fully insulated, with OSB, plasterboard, and a smooth plaster finish.

  • Painted throughout in Upton Country Park’s official colours, creating a cheerful and welcoming space.

  • Installed a brand-new kitchenette in the break room so volunteers can enjoy a hot drink and a snack.

  • Built a fully accessible washroom with modern fittings.

Heating, Plumbing, and Electrics – Efficient and Sustainable

The hut is equipped with:

  • Plumbing throughout, including eco-friendly features.

  • Full underfloor heating throughout

  • An air source heat pump for efficient, sustainable heating.

  • A full electrical installation, ensuring power wherever it’s needed.

Accessibility and Outdoor Works

We didn’t stop at the building itself – we created a fully accessible entranceway with aco drains down the middle to prevent water build-up and make access easy in all weather.

Restoring the Piggery – A Touch of Heritage

Alongside the new build, we gave some love to one of Upton Country Park’s heritage features – the old piggery. We repointed the brickwork in Lime to secure and preserve the structure, and crafted brand-new bespoke doors and gates to keep it looking smart and functional.

A True Community Project

This project was completed under the watchful eye of BCP Council and the Upton Country Park team. It’s a build we’re incredibly proud of – not just because of the quality craftsmanship involved, but because it gives something back to the volunteers who dedicate their time to caring for one of Dorset’s most beautiful green spaces.
