Dorset Build were approached to transform a permanent timber-framed and canvas-covered gazebo into a fully insulated and enclosed structure that could be used both as a retreat for the client’s grandchildren and as an occasional workspace. The challenge was to retain elements of the existing gazebo while creating a more robust, weatherproof, and visually appealing building—all within a budget-conscious scope.
The original structure consisted of a substantial engineered timber and steel frame mounted on a deck, with canvas providing the outer walls and roof. The new design called for a permanent timber-framed structure clad in white Cedral cement board and topped with a Mediterranean-style metal roof, offering both durability and charm.
Work began with the careful dismantling of the existing gazebo. Much of the original 4” square timber frame was salvaged for reuse. Upon lifting the decking, the substructure was found to be in poor condition, so we undertook repairs before progressing. Once made sound, six new 4” posts were installed to provide a fresh framework onto which the rest of the structure could be built. The salvaged frame was then reassembled and prepared for studding and insulation.
One of the more unique aspects of the project was the roofing material. The client had selected a pre-formed zinc product designed to mimic the look of red Mediterranean concrete tiles. Although none of our team had previously worked with this specific material, our combined experience and adaptability meant the installation was carried out without a hitch—delivering a striking and perfectly finished roof.
Externally, the structure was clad in Marley Cedral Lap Cladding in white, finished with powder-coated aluminium trims. This combination provided a crisp, modern look with the added benefit of being virtually maintenance-free. The contrast of the white cladding against the red roof tiles created a visually appealing and cohesive finish.
Inside, the client requested a clean and contemporary look using beech-faced plywood. As all internal fixings would remain visible, particular care was taken with every detail. Stainless steel screws were individually piloted and countersunk to deliver a flush, professional finish that enhanced the premium feel of the space.
To ensure the new room felt connected to the garden, three new windows were installed to face the main house, along with a set of double doors opening out onto the decking. These not only filled the room with natural light but also provided a seamless link between the retreat and the surrounding outdoor space.
In addition to the structural and aesthetic upgrades, a new armoured electrical cable was installed to safely supply power from the main house to the new garden room. This robust and weather-resistant solution ensures a reliable and long-term connection. Internally, several flush-fit downlights were installed to provide a soft, even illumination throughout the space, making it inviting at any time of day. A number of double sockets were also fitted to offer flexible power access for lighting, work, or leisure equipment. To provide warmth during cooler months, a compact oil-filled panel heater was wall-mounted, offering an efficient and low-maintenance heating solution that complements the building’s use as both a retreat and a functional workspace.
Through a flexible and resourceful approach, Dorset Build were able to reuse much of the existing structure while delivering a completely transformed space. The result is a comfortable, stylish, and practical garden room that offers year-round usability and a high-quality finish, proving that with the right design and execution, premium results can be achieved on a modest budget.
