Dorset Build was once again honoured to work with the National Trust, this time undertaking the full renovation of a charming period thatched cottage in Shapwick following the departure of a long-term tenant.

This listed property required a careful and sympathetic approach. We began by stripping out the old kitchen and bathroom fittings before carrying out a full rewire and plumbing upgrade to meet modern standards—laying the groundwork for a sensitive restoration.

A key feature of the project was the partial rebuild of the chimney. Our lime plaster specialist expertly recreated the original form, retaining all the character with none of the crumbling. As part of the same works, we reinstated a blocked-up fireplace, revealing a beautiful oak mantle, laying a new quarry-tiled hearth, and installing a wood-burning stove. The fireplace was finished in traditional lime plaster with hand-finished detailing, staying true to the cottage’s historical integrity.

One of the more unique challenges was the original reed and lime ceiling on the ground floor, which had deteriorated over time. Working closely with a conservation officer, we agreed to restore it using traditional lime-reed methods. Thanks to our in-house expertise in heritage techniques, the result was nothing short of a showpiece.

In the rear extension—a more modern part of the building—we installed a new kitchen that blends timeless aesthetics with the functionality expected in a contemporary home. Throughout the cottage, all finishes were completed using National Trust-approved heritage paints, giving a consistent, character-appropriate look.

Externally, we facilitated the installation of a new gas tank to serve the heating and cooking systems, constructing a bespoke timber screen to discreetly conceal it. We also carried out minor landscaping to ensure the grounds were safe, accessible, and ready for the next tenant.

This project is another excellent example of how Dorset Build applies its experience, craftsmanship, and respect for tradition to deliver thoughtful restorations on behalf of heritage organisations. We’re proud to be a trusted contractor for the National Trust and to play a part in preserving Dorset’s architectural legacy.
