Dorset Build were appointed to design and install a fully accessible kitchen at Ridgeway Day Centre in Weymouth, with a key focus on adaptability, inclusivity, and user safety. The project required careful consideration of mobility needs, appliance placement, and ease of use for individuals with disabilities—delivered with precision and empathy.

Working closely with the client through detailed design consultations, we developed a bespoke layout featuring an adjustable-height worktop with integrated electric hobs. A unique challenge during the design phase was ensuring the splashback maintained a watertight seal even when the worktop was in a lowered position—preventing liquid ingress while maintaining full adjustability.

The kitchen also incorporated a commercial-grade steam oven, ample preparation space, and a lift-up hatch system that maximises worktop continuity while allowing clear wheelchair access into the kitchen area.

To ensure safety and comfort, we installed new fire detection units, upgraded the lighting to modern high-lumen fittings for excellent visibility, and finished the space with a coved anti-slip microbial vinyl floor covering. This not only enhances hygiene and ease of maintenance but also provides a secure surface for all users.

The entire room was redecorated as part of the transformation, creating a bright, welcoming, and highly functional environment tailored specifically to the needs of the centre’s users.

This project is a fantastic example of how Dorset Build delivers custom solutions through collaborative planning and expert craftsmanship—helping to make spaces more inclusive, safe, and user-friendly for everyone.
